For good lighting you need the correct color and enough light.

If you wanted to use LEDs the the color temp should be 6000 - 6500 K this is the same color temp as normal daylight.

I ordered both types (120 mm fresnel and DC) to test and compare.

Also very important for filming under water is backscatter, this is the reflection of light on particles floating in the water.
To minimize this backscatter its important to place you lamps so that the reflecting light can't reach the lens of the camera.

Please let us know how this goes. I've been experimenting with color correction and stage lighting gels, with LED's and standard fixtures. But I'm not ready to make any statements yet. LED's are bright but there are some issues with light scatter. I am also wondering if IR lighting and IR cameras might not be an option.

My understanding (and I accept that I might be wrong) is that in general the light source should be placed behind the camera and to avoid backscatter, situated a suitable distance apart to each side. As shown – Dscent303.

I have taken my inspiration from the excellent ROV designed by Jonas Reiffers - Descent303.

I would welcome your comments as you both have the relevant experience.

Place 2 lights left and right from the camera and use narrow beam lights so that particles in the water don't get illuminated.

In the picture section A and B are the lights and in these lightbeams backscatter can occure.
In section C there is no light so particles in the water will not produce backscatter.

this is ok for navigation lighting, but is too much for video or photography
for video or photography you can use a cheap fresnel lens
