Aloha building my first ROV
hi i am in hawaii; am in the marine salvage business so rov will also have business purposes, looking to make mine from aluminum, and use brushless motors in oil for thrusters , looking for info on using oil seals and best props for this, will have cameras in front and back, and some sort of manipulator, want min 300 foot deep range,

To start with what kind of depth are you expecting your ROV to achieve?
This will better give the forum members some idea of your basic expectations.
There are lots of design options and many many ways to build an ROV and control it.
The more information you can provide the better.
Also what kind of budget do you have?
It's a nice for you to know what to expect for expenses before you start your build. For anything above a hobby application and you really intend to build a work platform It wont be cheap to do it right. Of course this will greatly depend on your real needs and the what type of materials may be needed to reach your goals.

well, hoping for min of 300 ft depth, and looking to build from aluminium, have access to aluminium welding and some scrap tubing including some very cool teardrop shaped tube for the main hull, wish to use brushless motors in oil for thrusters, probably be compass oil as it is very light and i have a few old compasses, may even try to use the dome from one as the camera dome, not sure of there strength yet though, budget is variable but expect to spend a thousand dollars even getting much as recyclable parts.. already bought a few brushless motors with 30a speed controllers,they are very small and not sure if powerful enough, and expect to use ardunio controllers in both rov and controller

That is a great way to start. You have a budget in mind, you have obviously done some research and have allready bought or aquired some things.
There are some sharp arduino gurus around, programing is not my thing so ask questions and lots of them and hopefully everyone will contribute and help you along.
Well with the basics you have shared I have a few questions.
Is the oil used in the compasses you have electrically conductive or non conductive?
What size are your brushless motors?
What kind of ESC's do you have?
What do you think will be the over all dimensions of the ROV? Just so I can get a mental picture, I am nosey that way!! LOL

You have come to the right place!
Sounds like you have already been doing some home work and have a pretty good idea of what you want to do! Have a look around the forum, I am sure there are a few tips hidden in here!
Have you given any considerations to what you will use for a camera and light system? I'm just guessing here, but you mentioned you are in the salvage business, so I guessing you are looking for an extra toy to help out!
If you are looking for just another set of eyes on the bottom, be sure to plan on lots of light and a few good cameras! If you are looking for an extra hand, you are going to want lots of control over positioning. Don't forget you are going to want some way of knowing where you are on the bottom when you do find something. A compass and depth gage are a good place to start!
Some of the pros use 10 or more motors to power their ROVs. This gives them lots of control, redundancy in case of failure, and the ability to work in stronger currents. A system this complex will require some sort of on-board micro controller. Arduino tends to be a favourite and there are plenty of DIY hobbyists out there using Arduino and sharing their ideas and tips online! (I, however, may be a bit bias, as I am using Arduino.)
Anyway... I have delayed long enough... time to get back to work!

Aloha KR_2 m and thanks for your input, plan now is for 4 motors (but may change) 2 fwd/rev 1 up/down and 1 side mounted for strafing, plan on using ardunio ,and looking at the rage cam for a camera, its a hd low light 1/3 ccd camera for about $115 on ebay , check it out if you have time seems pretty good for the money, gonna use leds for lights have already bought somes upposedly 90 lumens at they claim 1.3 watts but think thats wrong, and they are bright!! figure what i dont use can use on one of the boats.... also was working with one of our divers the other day and he told me of ppl harvesting shells with a rov, some are worth $500 each and at 200+ ft and lots of sharks there... so rov is the way to go, thinking of working that into the plan now, i mean if rov can make some money, budget goes up! thanks for all your ideas, you guys are great!
